Applying for a Building Permit
A building permit is required before any construction project can be started. This permit is issued by the Code Enforcement Office which checks to make sure the project complies with zoning, building, plumbing, electrical and fire code ordinances adopted by the city and State of Maine.
You need a building permit:
For construction or alteration of a structure
For construction of an addition
For demolishing or moving a structure
When making a change of occupancy
When moving a lot line which effects an existing structure
When installing vinyl siding
When changing windows
When installing a sign for a business
When installing a radio and/or television tower
When installing a shed, deck, or sunroom
When installing an above-ground or built-in swimming pool
Separate permits are required for electrical and plumbing work.

To obtain a permit, you need to complete a permit application and submit two sets of plans for your project. Fees for building permits vary according to the size and type of project. A
Once granted, you will receive a building permit and one set of approved plans which must remain on the job site until the final inspection and the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy.
