Prevention
In October of 1994, the Saco Fire Department in partnership with the Biddeford
Fire Department unveiled a fire safety training tool that would enable them to teach local
school children how to make their homes safe as well as what to do in the event that a fire
occurred in their home. The safety house has a bedroom and kitchen equipped with
smoke detectors, pull stations, and cameras. The activities can be monitored in a control
room located at the far end of the safety house. Each year Saco teaches approximately
800-1000 students in crawling below smoke, kitchen safety, dialing 911, selecting a
meeting place, smoke detectors, having a second way out and much more. The program
has been a great success and each year the students look forward to the training sessions.
The safety house enables the students to have practical application to lessons learned.
