Parks and Recreation Department
Inside City Hall: The Parks and Rec department

The Parks and Recreation Department provides for the recreational needs of the residents of Saco. The Department is comprised of five divisions under the umbrella of the Parks & Recreation Department. The divisions are: Recreation, Beach Management, Urban Forest, Municipal Grounds and Facilities Management. Our staffing includes a Parks and Recreation Director, Deputy Director, Director of Programs, Recreation Administrator, Administrative Assistant, Recreation Programmer, 2 Program Coordinators, 2 Program Aides, Crew Chief, Grounds keeper, Parks Maintainer/ Truck Driver and Custodian. During the course of the year SPR hires temporary seasonal staff to meet our program needs and seasonal park maintenance. Additionally volunteers are an integral part of our youth program staffing.

RECREATION DIVISION:
The Recreation Division is the programming portion of the Department. Our summer program involves well over 500 children in programs which include our multiple age appropriate camps, tennis, t-ball and specialty camps. The fall soccer program has over 400 youth involved as do our winter basketball programs. These programs rely on volunteers to assist with coaching and helping the teams.

Our after school program which meet the needs for many parents offer services for before school, after school, early release and full days out/ vacation days during the entire school year. There are over 300 enrolled in this program.

The Department also offers a variety of adult programs including volleyball, softball, indoor walking and pickle ball.

BEACH MANAGEMENT DIVISION:
The Beach Management Division of Parks and Recreation Department is a seasonal component as the City has no year round aquatics facility. We staff up to two seasonal beaches with approximately 6 lifeguards from late June through Labor Day.

URBAN FOREST DIVISION:
The Urban Forest Division of Saco Parks and Recreation is tasked with both the administration of contractual tree services and completion of arboricultural maintenance activities by park staff in the care of the community’s street trees and urban forest. The Department’s duties include hazard tree identification, assessment of the health of the urban forest, and to act as an advisor to the planning department with regards to development review. This Department is tasked by City Code to be responsible for the routine care, planting and emergency storm maintenance of all City trees. All basic tree care, planting and emergency work is covered by in house staffing.

MUNICIPAL GROUNDS DIVISION:
The Municipal Grounds Division is responsible for the maintenance of parks, athletic fields, public grounds, trees and trails around the city. This includes, among other things, mowing more than 140 acres of municipal land, the maintenance of equipment, and pruning of shrubs, planting of flowers, repair of picnic tables, benches, play structures, and other amenities.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT DIVISION:
The program for Facilities Maintenance includes all repairs and upgrades not budgeted for in capital, as well as all utilities required to run an operational Recreation Center, Emergency Evacuation Center and City Polling Center for all City elections.
