John Burke's compassion for people, particularly crime victims, led him to become an Assistant District Attorney specializing in domestic violence cases. His interest dovetailed perfectly with the Saco Police Department's search for a different, more effective way to protect victims of domestic violence from continuing violence at the hands of their domestic partners. This June, largely due to John's leadership, trainers from the Maine Domestic Violence Project traveled to the Saco Police Department and every sworn officer was trained in the use of the ODARA tool to predict repeated violence by male domestic partners against their female partners.
We believe this to be the first full scale implementation pilot project in Maine for ODARA, and we are excited by the increased safety to crime victims it will provide. John has certainly fulfilled the requirements for earning a Challenge Coin, and we are proud to award one to him.
