Have you ever heard of Adopt-A-Road? I always assumed it was an advertising gimmick where you pay to say that this is your stretch of road. I didn't realize that Adopt-a-Road is actually where if you make an effort to keep a stretch of road clean, then you get credit for it by having a sign posted saying that you were the person who cleaned the road. Sounds like a good deal right. You pick up some litter and everyone knows that you care about our City. Currently no one has adopted any roads in Saco. The responsibility only lasts for two years and all of the 'Contracts' have expired. So, who wants to Adopt-A-Road? You commit to cleaning the road for two years like I said before and you clean it about three times a year. All of the supplies that you need to pick up trash come from the Public Works Department. We even give you safety gear like warning signs to post on the road, and the high fashion safety vests, so that there are no accidents. If you come across something that you cannot take care of yourself, like a couch, or something hazardous, Public Works will take care of that for you. And, when you're all done you can bring the litter that has been cleaned up to the Saco Fire Department building on Thornton Ave. There is more information about Adopt-A-Road at the Public Works office in Saco, as well as a list of roads that can be adopted. Obviously we don't want anyone to get hurt, so major roadways and State Highways are off limits. There are some age limits as well; we don't want this to be kindergarten class projects. Please Call Saco Public Works at 284-6641 or me at 282-1552 if you are interested in adopting a road. I can also be reached by email at aoliver@sacomaine.org. Keep recycling and I love your comments so keep them coming!
