Main Street reconstruction project
May 9, 2005
This week the work in the vicinity of the Post Office will be complete. The sidewalks have been poured and the work on Free Street is complete.
The crews have begun work on the next block. The fire hydrant in front of Vic's Appliance has been relocated to align with the new curb line. A storm drain in front of the health food store will be replaced and the existing curbing and sidewalk will be removed. New curbing will be installed and the concrete for the new sidewalks will be poured next week.

Last week's rainy weather had a significant impact on construction activities. While the electrical subcontractor was able to complete certain tasks, sidewalk construction was all but shut down. The contractor did complete the installation of drainage structures and granite curbing.
This week, concrete will be poured for the new sidewalks. This will include the area from Your Hearts Desire to the Post Office. At this point certain parking areas will become available. The crew will turn onto Free Street and remove the sidewalks down to the entrance to the Post Office parking lot. A section of Free Street will be excavated for the installation of electrical conduit.

The crew made excellent progress last week.
This week the sidewalk work will continue between Your Hearts Desire and the Post Office. Curbing will be installed, forms constructed and cement placed for the sidewalk.
On Free Street, the sidewalk on the southerly (Post Office) side will be removed and reconstructed. A small section of Free Street will be excavated for electrical conduit, which will feed a number of businesses on the north side of Main Street.
Weather is expected to be a factor in this week's schedule. Any significant rainfall would delay the installation of the sidewalk particularly pouring concrete. Hopefully it will be showers and not a deluge as was experienced over the weekend.

Work began the week of April 4th. The first phase is the installation of conduit for a fiber optic system connecting City Hall with the Police and Fire Departments. This will involve excavating a trench on the northerly side of Main Street from Cutts Avenue to Storer Street. Excavations will also be made on Storer St. and Thornton Ave from Main St. to the Police and Fire Departments. This is expected to be completed in two weeks weather permitting. Parking will be affected and delays should be anticipated. Access to all buildings and businesses will be maintained at all times. Pedestrians should be cautious at when walking in the vicinity of this work.
The electricians have erected the light poles in Pepperell Square. Within the next two weeks, CMP will be rerouting wiring to power the fixtures making them functional. Within the next six weeks crosswalks will be installed.
Following installation of the fiber optic system, the contractor will begin the sidewalk work. The existing curbing and sidewalk on each side of Main St. will be removed and replaced. Granite curbing will replace the existing curb and concrete sidewalks will be installed. New street lighting and trees are included in this project.
Work on this phase will begin at Rapid Rays and proceed up Main St. to School St. The crews will cross Main St and work south from Cutts Ave. to Water St. This work will have a serious impact on both vehicular and pedestrian traffic as well as parking. Businesses will remain open and access will be maintained. It is anticipated that this work will be complete by the end of July.
Construction updates will be posted on the website as the project progresses. Please remember to check these regularly.
