Biddeford recycling center
May 16, 2005
The City of Biddeford has a Recycling Center and a Transfer Station located at their Public Works building. The reason I mention this is because once I had someone from Biddeford call me because he didn't know where to recycle and he wanted to know if it was ok to bring things to Saco. Well, recycled materials are always welcome at Saco's Recycling Center, located at Saco Public Works. However, Biddeford also has the capacity to handle recycled materials, as well as brush, yard waste, bulky items, appliances (coffee machines, toasters, stereos and misc. electronics) and white goods (White goods are things like freezers, a/c, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers).
Biddeford Public Works is located at 371 Hill St. in Biddeford. The Recycling Center (recyclables, metal, brush, leaves) is open Monday through Friday 7 AM to 4:45 PM and Saturday and Sunday 7 AM to 2:45 PM. The transfer station (large items/demo debris) is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 AM to 4:45 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 2:45 (the Transfer Station is closed Thursday and Sunday).
BBI Waste Ind. also operates a transfer station located at 1 Vallee Lane in Old Orchard Beach. They are open from 7AM to 4PM Monday through Friday, 8AM to 12PM and closed on Sundays. They accept appliances, furniture, computers, commuter accessories and universal waste. BBI also will take your used propane tanks, both large and small. You can call them with questions about pricing at 934-3880.
Commercial Paving and Recycling in Scarborough is open to the public. Their hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday 8AM to 4PM. They are located at 2 Gibson Rd in Scarborough. For a list of what materials are acceptable, call them at 883-3325. Commercial Paving and Recycling also sells bark mulch, screened compost, 3/4" stone, screened loam and 3/4" crushed recycled aggregate. Both of these transfer stations will not accept any kind of hazardous waste, dead animals or household trash. Also, because Commercial Paving and Recycling and BBI Waste Ind. are not municipal transfer stations, there is a fee for just about everything, don't get mad, it's a business. Biddeford also has to charge for items because it costs the city money to dispose of them as well.
Transfer Stations are great for bulky items like couches and mattresses and demolition debris. Also accepted are things like brush, wood, leaf and other yard waste. Many appliances are also accepted (white goods and electronics). For a price list you can go to Biddeford Public Works and get the solid waste management brochure or you can call them at 282-1579, or give Commercial Paving and Recycling a call for their prices.
I have a correction to make! The correct phone number to reach Susan Reid at Imagine Helping People In Need is 294-4357; I apologize for any inconvenience. I look forward to your comments so keep them coming! I can be reached at the Public Works office at 282-1552 or by email at swojcoski@sacomaine.org. Every bit of waste prevented is a huge help to the environment so continue the good work.
