Subtractive meters

How you can stop paying Sewer Fees for water which doesn't enter the sewer?

The City of Saco Wastewater Department allows the use of subtractive water meters to record water that does not enter the City Sewer System. So water that is used for watering lawns, washing vehicles, and filling swimming pools can be subtracted from your Sewer User Fees. The same may apply to businesses that have some sort of consumptive water use.

A water meter sold by the city can be installed in any lines that do not enter the sewer. the meters are read by the customer once a year and the volume that went through the meter will be credited to your account.

The cost of the meter is $66.84 for the 5/8" meter and payback for an existing home is 3-5 years depending on the use. A new home with new lawns can realize a payback in one year.

What to do:

  • Call Ken Grace at the WWTP @ 282-3564.
  • Schedule a pre-installation inspection with Ken.
  • Purchase a meter from the City for $66.84 for a 5/8'" meter (only meters sold by the City are allowed).
  • Have the meter installed in the agreed to location by your contractor or yourself.
  • Call Ken for a post inspection certification.

How to get a credit:
Sewer user fee bills sent out in the spring and fall of each year will have a notice on them requesting you to call in the reading from the subtractive meter. Simply call in the reading to Sue Sexton at 282-3564. The amount recorded on the meter will be applied as a credit on your next sewer bill.
