Fairfield Street Reconstruction Project
Fairfield Street is a heavily traveled street that starts at the signalized intersection on Main Street adjacent to Thornton Academy and is used as a route to North Street (also using Union Street or Nott Street). It is not a well constructed street and the pavement is deteriorated. Some drainage improvement will be necessary to upgrade the street. The curb and sidewalk curb needs to be reset and upgraded. The sanitary sewer is undersized, full of roots, has no access manholes, is problematic and must be replaced.

Sewer improvements would include replacement of existing sewer and house services to the right of way line and construction of manholes. Existing granite curb would be removed and salvaged, existing bituminous curb removed, and all new granite curb installed. The street would be excavated and reconstructed with improved profiling and alignment, and coordinated with access needs of the design. The sidewalks would be reconstructed on both sides of the street for pedestrian safety and the esplanade improved. The total estimated cost is $300,000.
Without improvement, the sewer will continue to be problematic and a potential health hazard. Without alignment improvements and reconstruction Fairfield Street will continue to deteriorate. The most cost effective approach is to undertake all of the needed improvements in a single project.
