Middle Street Extension Reconstruction
The City Public Works Department reconstructed Middle Street Extension and the entrance to Burns School in July and August of 2006. The project involved removing all of the existing pavement on Middle Street and replacing substandard portions of the base gravels. The existing sidewalk on the easterly side was replaced with new gravels and bituminous surface and the sidewalk on the westerly side was extended to the Dyer Library entrance. The project completely curbed the street with a combination of granite and bituminous curb.
Additionally, the entrance to Burns School was widened, granite curb was reset and the entrance and parking lot were repaved.
The project took 20.5 working days for City crews to complete at a cost of $15,500 for City labor. Materials for paving, gravels, and curbing totaled $38,000 for a total project cost of approximately $53,500.
The resulting project will result in a road that will better withstand bus and commuter traffic, provides safer and additional parking, and improved drainage on the street.
