Saco Ranks High in New Housing Starts in 2006
A recent report compiled by Construction Data New England has pegged Saco as one of the busiest Cities in Southern Maine when it comes to new housing starts.

CDNE surveys 41 cities and towns in southern Maine and has found that Saco permitted 83 new housing construction starts for all of 2006, slightly behind Wells who took the top spot with 96 housing starts. The 83 housing starts noted in Saco include a mix of single-family, two-family and condominium units.

Over the past 4 years there has been a steady increase in the number of condominium housing starts but they have always lagged behind the number of detached single-family housing starts until this year when the numbers were almost exactly even.

The total dollar value of all new construction permitted in Saco reached $33,708,995 for 2006, down from $42 million in 2005. This reflects the nationwide economic slow-down in the once red-hot housing market. This trend appears to be continuing for at least the first quarter of 2007 with permit activity in the first month running almost even with 2006.
