Parks & Rec wins Project Canopy grant
The Parks & Recreation Department is pleased to announce the acceptance of a 2007 Project Canopy tree grant for $10,000. Funding for the grant comes from the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program and is administered through the Maine Forest Service Project Canopy.

The intent of this grant project is to build a comprehensive database of all city owned trees. To accomplish this, the Parks & Recreation Department will purchase computer software specifically designed for tree inventory that will integrate into the cities current GIS mapping software. Using a portable digital device this software will be brought into the field and can be modified to reflect the current conditions.

Once in the field data can be shown directly to residents who may have questions or concerns about trees abutting their property. Not only will this allow city personnel to answer questions correctly and efficiently but can also be used to show property lines and determine tree locations using GPS coordinates. Once complete this portable database will streamline the department's current process and decrease the response time to residents with tree concerns.
