School Resource Officer Michael Carrier
Officer Michael Carrier has been a School Resource Officer for School Union #7 for the past five years. A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a certified law enforcement officer assigned to the schools. "Officer Mike", as the kids call him, can be found walking the halls of Saco's elementary and middle schools giving kids "high fives" and establishing positive relationships with the school community.
Officer Carrier is involved in many programs in the schools. He facilitates the Red E. Fox 911 Program (K-1), Bicycle Safety (K-5), Bike Rodeo with the P.T.O. (K-2), Drug & Alcohol Awareness (5-8), Child Abuse & Neglect (8th grade), and Internet Safety along with Officer Bedell (middle school). Officer Carrier is also visible in the classrooms to discuss various topics such as crime scene investigations, bullying, peer pressure and many other topics that pertain to school-aged children.
Many teachers have invited Officer Carrier to be directly involved in classroom instruction. He has co-planned and implemented a "Crime Scene Investigation" activity to coincide with the 7th grade Reading program's mystery theme. The 6th grade maroon team looks forward to "Officer Carrier's Question of the Week". Officer Carrier brings in a weekly question about Maine for the students to answer. It has turned into a contest of the Class vs. Officer Carrier. He has given tours of the police department and has also chaperoned various extended classroom experiences.
When not in the classroom, Officer Carrier is involved in many student issues. He is a liaison between the schools, parents, police department and the community. Officer Carrier is a valuable asset to the district and is committed to ensuring the safety of our schools.
