Civil War exhibit at Saco Museum
The exhibition Merit is better than fame: The Civil War and the Women & Men of Maine on view at the Saco Museum through Sunday, November 11, 2007. This extraordinary exhibition features items from both the museum collection and the Dyer Library Archives, and numerous objects on loan from other institutions and private individuals.
Utilizing artifacts, letters, poems, daguerreotypes, diaries, uniforms and weapons, the exhibition will explore the role of Maine's men and women in the Civil War on both the homefront and the battlefield. A journal kept by Private John W. Haley will be one of the featured items in the exhibit. Haley's journal is both an engaging and heart wrenching account of the Civil War, the most popular subject in American history. Haley, who was born on March 3, 1840 in Biddeford and later became a Saco resident, kept a detailed account of his time serving in the 17th Maine Regiment during the war. Remarkably, his entire diary is housed in the Dyer Library Archives and was published as the book The Rebel Yell & The Yankee Hurrah.
Several programs are being offered in conjunction with the exhibition, including the following:
