Fenderson Road reconstruction

Fenderson Road reconstruction began in mid October and is progressing rapidly towards the goal of having base pavement down prior to winter. The three thousand feet of roadway is undergoing major upgrades including widening, drainage improvements, and paving to bring the road to current standards. Extensive tree pruning and removal was necessary for the widening together with relocation of several utility poles.

A significant hurdle overcome during construction was the removal of shallow ledge encountered within and next to the existing roadway. Changes to the road elevation made during the design phase averted most of the ledge. However, some areas required removal of the ledge by ripping with an excavator or hammering with a large hydraulic hammer to break it up prior to excavation and removal from the site. The City did not permit blasting ledge due to the proximity of existing homes and wells.

This fall, the goal is to construct the base course of pavement, achieving immediate benefits to anyone traveling Hearn Road or Fenderson Road before winter. The twenty five sets of trash and recycling containers that currently line the hill on Hearn Rd obstructing visibility will be eliminated and the intersection with Fenderson Road will provide safer turning movements. The most important benefit will be greatly improved emergency vehicle access. Shoulder work, ditching and landscaping will continue in the spring and surface pavement will be constructed within the next year.
