Saco has been the scene of several major commercial construction projects in the past few months with more on the way. Some of the projects now underway include a 13,000 square foot addition to Meridian Life Sciences, formerly known as Bio-Design, a manufacturing plant for medical testing kits located on the Industrial Park Road in the Saco Industrial Park.
Casco Bay Steel Structures, a manufacturer of steel beam bridge spans has a 12,000 square foot addition under construction at 75 Spring Hill Road and Franklin Fueling Systems, formerly known as Incon, a manufacturer of monitoring equipment for underground fuel storage facilities, has a new 33,600 square foot manufacturing facility under construction at 34 Spring Hill Road.
In addition to those manufacturing facilities, the City has been fortunate to experience some new retail business expansions including the all new Prime Toyota-Scion auto dealership on the Portland Road and the Run of the Mill Brew Pub, now under construction in one of the vacant mill buildings on Saco Island. In addition, the building located at 199 Main Street has been fully renovated and now houses the law offices of Smith, Elliott, Smith & Garmey on the second and third floors and 3 new retail businesses on the ground floor that include the Candy Garden (candies and treats), Alphie's (men's clothing), and Simply You Too (women's clothing).
Downtown also welcomed Bertilino's Italian restaurant, the Blue Elephant and Clark Insurance Agency, all located in Pepperell Square. Almost complete in downtown is a major expansion to Vic & Whits which will house a specialty wine and beer shop. Bangor Savings Bank also opened a banking center when it acquired the former Pepperell Bank &Trust. On Elm Street, Quiznos, Maggie Moo and Town & Country Credit Union opened their doors to Saco residents. Over on Storer Street, Yummy Thai opened a new Thai restaurant in the former Shenanigan's Pub.
A new Transportation Center, which will also house the Biddeford-Saco Chamber of Commerce is well under construction and will be welcoming visitors arriving on Amtrak. When they get off the train, they will be welcomed by the new wind turbine recently erected by the City adjacent to the train station.
