The push towards alternative energy
With the cost of energy rising and the threat to our environment from the use of fossil fuels individuals and communities are turning to alternative forms of generating power. Some of the more popular ways are wind turbine and photovoltaic systems. The most cost effective way to incorporate these systems into our power systems is by the use of the grid tie method. This eliminates the need to maintain a large and costly battery bank.
The grid tie method puts the energy generated from the wind turbine or photocells back to the grid. When there is no wind or sun, power is taken from the grid to power your systems. This uses the electrical power grind as your battery bank.
The National Electrical Code has many articles that address the requirements for the installation of photovoltaic systems. Article 690 of the National Electrical Code address the installation of photovoltaic systems specifically. While there is no specific code article that addresses the installation of wind turbines, there are many other articles that need to be followed for safe and proper installation of these systems. It is required that only licensed electricians wire these systems. In addition to being licensed by the State of Maine there is another certification recommended for installation of photovoltaic systems. The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners has a certification program that certifies installers of photovoltaic systems. The State of Maine requires that installers of photovoltaic systems complete a NABCEP certification class in order to receive state rebates.
When looking into which system is best for you it is important to understand your power requirements, your budget and your limitations regarding location of the wind turbine or solar panels. It is best to get an electrician early in the planning process. In order to better understand the power requirements for your electrical distribution please see the common appliance wattage requirements.
While saving money is important, it is also important that all systems be installed correctly and safely. An electrician can be one of your best resources to save money on your energy cost. Prior to looking into alternate energy systems you should review your current electrical system to see if you could save money by making minor changes in bulbs, installing timers, checking for voltage leaking to ground, older appliances with worn heating elements or in effient motors or cleaning bath fans to reduce drag and increase air flow.
Once you have reviewed your electrical system and are ready to look into a wind turbine or photovoltaic system, call an electrician early in the planning process. Contact your electrical inspector. He/she can advise you on the code requirements and the safest way to insure that you have an efficient system and a safe system.
