In February of 2010, Economic Development Director Peter Morelli wrote and was awarded an EECBG grant that included energy conservation and efficiency improvements to the Community Center.
This month these improvements have been completed The Saco Solar Store was awarded a bid for the design and installation of a solar heating array that has been operational this whole winter. The design utilizes Solarsheat panels manufactured by Your Solar Home. This is a product that has been previously used on other municipal buildings throughout the city with great success. This project was no exception and is currently the largest utilization of the panels in the city.
This project consisted of two solar heater banks each consisting of three (3) 1500GS Solarsheat panels and two (2) smaller photovoltaic panels. The panels were installed to help offset the heat load of our 110x80 gymnasium.
In addition the Saco Solar Store also supplied six Arius Thermal Equalizers that have been installed in the gym and stair well towers. These units direct warm air downwards in high areas were the heat is normally not utilized. These units with a smaller fan inside a housing utilize much less electricity than traditional bladed fans.
With the assistance of Marcel Desrosiers; City Electrical Inspector and Ed Profenno from DPW 97% of all interior lighting within the Community Center is now controlled by occupancy sensors. These sensors automatically turn the lights on and off as you walk in and out of rooms and hallways. In all more than 30 sensors; such as to those to the right, have been installed.
