Construction in Saco up in all sectors

Building construction appears to be on the rebound in Saco after a couple of sluggish years with almost no activity in the commercial sectors and marginal activity in new housing starts. The tables above show that new housing starts have escalated to 29 at the end of April 2011 as compared to 20 last year and 13 in 2009.

Commercial construction, which all but disappeared last year made a strong rebound as well with a couple of major projects underway including a 24,000 square foot addition to the FedEx Distribution Facility on Industrial Park Road and Monkey Trunks High Adventure Ropes Course off the Cascade Road.

Saco saw its first multi-family apartment building project in many years with the permitting of the Cascade Brook Apartments to be located on what is to be known as "Connector Road" in the Cascade Falls project.

Overall construction spending has risen to over $5.6 million for 2011. This represents a significant increase over the past 2 years. Although the economy continues to be sluggish in many sectors, construction, at least here in Saco appears to be making a strong rebound.
