Changes in electrical code
Welcome to another code update year. As always I will try to ease the changes in as smoothly as possible. Here are some of the major changes:
  1. Working clearances and exits around service equipment 1200 amp, regardless of size. This deletes the requirement that the equipment must be 6 ft. in width.
  2. This is a big one. The creation of an equipotent grid around pools. I ask if you have questions regarding this one, please call me.
  3. This code version stresses the need to ground the rebar in foundations. In the past some electricians have argued grounding the rebar causes the rebar to rust. This is not true, and it is mandatory to bond the rebar.
  4. High Intensity Discharge lights need guards. The pressure in these lights can result in the bulb exploding and moulton falling on the people below. The one exception is a fixture that only allows type "O" lamps.
  5. This one is very controversial. The 2005 code reinforces that non-metallic sheath cable cannot be used above suspended ceilings.
  6. The 2005 code also now states that non-metallic sheath cable (a combustible wiring method) cannot be used in construction that requires noncombustible building materials. As a result of omission in the National Electric Code, Saco used a local ordinance to stop this dangerous practice. The National Electric Code has caught up to Saco.
There are many other important changes. Theses are only a few of the highlights. As always should ever have any questions please feel free to call me. The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked.

Now for some pictures. See if you can spot the electrical deficiencies?
