Change is in the air
The Saco Parks & Recreation Department is extremely proud of the changes we have made to our programs over the last couple of years. Our goal has been to increase participation and develop a successful strategy for not only providing fun activities but also teaching the basics and fundamentals of the subject matter offered. It is important that our programs provide a basic instruction of the activity along with the rules of the game. It's not about throwing a bunch of basketballs out on a court, have the children throw them around for an hour and call it a structured basketball program.

Not all children strive to play sports in Jr. High, High School or College but they should be taught how to play the game on the simplest of levels and then if they and their parents choose to pursue it at the next level, we have provided a solid base for them to grow.

We are developing practice and game plans for both our volunteer coaches and parents. This will provide a tool for parents to reinforce these activities at home. It will also provide our parent volunteers guidelines for helping out with our programs.

All Parks & Recreation programs rely heavily on volunteers. We must start most of our larger programs with team "practices" in order to find a parent who will step forward and lead a team. Many adults respond by saying "I don't know how to coach". We want to make it as easy as possible for people to help out. Most of the time, especially at the younger levels of our programs, we lead the activities and ask that our volunteers follow our lead and reinforce what our staff is teaching. If you can give any time to one of our programs please don't hesitate to talk to a staff member in the office or at the programs.
