City to provide temporary fix for Route 112

Due to budget constraints the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) delayed the construction of a portion of the state highway, Route 112 (Buxton Road) until 2008. The section of road between the Rocky Hill Road and Route 117 was never constructed to carry the weights being transported the large trucks. The MDOT refers to this as an unbuilt road or a road that does not have adequate base and subbase materials to support the weight of the heavy trucks. The failure of the base material causes the road to rut and the pavement to be destroyed.

Since the construction of the Poland Springs Bottling Facility in Hollis, Route 112 has seen a significant increase in truck traffic. Trucks are a major contributor to the deterioration of the roadway and the City has seen an accelerated deterioration of the Buxton Road since the facility was built. The MDOT will be constructing the road in the same manner as the section that was completed last year.

Because of the dangerous deterioration of portions of the unbuilt section of Buxton road, the City will need to provide temporary pavement to allow a safe road for travel. In May, the City will spend between $15,000 and $20,000 to make the road safe and passable for the next two winters.
