Saco Designated a Preserve America Community
In April, Saco was designated a Preserve America Community as part of the Preserve America initiative, a White House plan to encourage and support communities in their efforts to preserve America's cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the initiative include a greater shared knowledge about the nation's past; strengthened regional identities and local pride; increased local participation in preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage assets; and support for the economic vitality of communities.

Saco was recognized for its efforts to protect, celebrate and enjoy its heritage and historical assets. As a Preserve America Community, Saco receives benefits including national recognition, and a listing in a web-based directory that showcases preservation successes and heritage tourism destinations. The Preserve America designation also makes Saco eligible to apply for Preserve America Grants to help support research, planning, marketing, interpretation, and training efforts in support of preservation efforts.

A Preserve America Grant will is being pursued to encourage heritage tourism as an economic development tool, and to create historical learning opportunities for Saco residents and visitors alike.

Saco adopted an historic preservation ordinance in 1986 and created the downtown historic district in 1991. The district is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
