This is a question the Finance customer service staff hear very often: Why must I present the window sticker for my new vehicle when I go to register it? And mostly from people who don't have the sticker (also known as the Mulroney Label) when they want to register their car! So, here is the story.
The window sticker is a document required by Maine law to be presented when a car purchased from a Maine dealer is registered for the first time. The window sticker is the exact listing of the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for that vehicle. The MSRP is then used to determine the excise tax paid each year for that particular type of vehicle. So, by ensuring that every vehicle registered is taxed based on the accurate MSRP from the window sticker, we know that everyone is being taxed the same amount for the vehicles we drive.
No one likes the excise tax, but we all pay it. The excise tax creates revenues for municipalities to help share the burden of road maintenance by actual users of those roads. By having the window sticker to establish the correct MSRP in that first year, Maine law makes sure the excise is an equitable tax, that is: everyone is treated the same, which is in everyone's best interest!
