The Downtown Saco Land Use Forum
5:30 p.m., Thursday, June 3, 2010
City Hall Auditorium
The City is in the process of updating its 1999 Comprehensive Plan. A key part of the Comprehensive Plan is the Future Land Use Plan which lays out a vision for how various areas of the City should develop or redevelop or avoid development over the next 10-20 years. The document plays an important role since state law requires that the City's zoning be consistent with the Comprehensive Plan.
The Comprehensive Plan Update Committee has started the process of reviewing and updating the Future Land Use Plan to better reflect the current situation and the evolving goals of the community. The Committee has developed draft ideas for the future of the various parts of the city, including the downtown area. These ideas will be refined over the next several months and included in the Future Land Use Plan that will be proposed to the City Council.
The draft ideas to be discussed at the forum look at eight areas within the downtown and suggest a vision for each area. It then looks (in general terms) at what the City's land use regulations should be for each area. A map and description of the eight downtown areas are available on the City's web site at http://www.sacomaine.org/downtownforum.shtml. If you prefer, these materials can be obtained from the Planning Department at City Hall, 282-3487. The eight areas are:
- Downtown Business Area
- Downtown Limited Business Area
- Downtown Residential - Mixed-Use Area
- Elm Street Corridor
- Scamman Street Shopping Center
- Lincoln Street Transition Area
- Front Street Waterfront Area
- Saco Island Planned Development Area
