November 3, 2020 Election Updates

Saco changes polling location to Thornton Academy Linnell Gymnasium for enhanced social distancing, parking, and accessibility.

The City has prepared an already-effective communications strategy to make sure the word gets out.

Under guidance outlined in the Governor's Order 8, FY 20/21 dated August 26, 2020, I. C. Change of Polling Places, the City of Saco received approval from the Secretary of State on October 14, 2020, to designate the Thornton Academy gymnasium as the polling place for the November 3, 2020 Election. In the past, voting has occurred at the Saco Community Center. On this Election Day, all citizens will cast their votes at Thornton Academy's Linnell Gymnasium at 438 Main Street.

The polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and staff limitations, voters will be separated alphabetically, rather than by ward, once they are in the single polling place - Thornton Academy's Gymnasium.

The TA gym is bigger, better enabling social distancing and our ability to satisfy the CDC and the State requirements. Additionally, there are two large parking lots available for use, which increases the number of parking spaces available on Election Day. The City is grateful for the partnership with Thornton Academy, who is not charging the City to use the space on Election Day.

We plan to distribute this information as broadly as possible, including digital signboards, newsletters, social media, press, advertisements, and more. We have now placed a sticker on voter registration acknowledgment forms advising those still registering to vote of the updated polling place. On Election Day, staff at the Saco Community Center will advise voters of the new location if they arrive there to vote.

Community members and media can help spread the word by sharing this information, especially with Saco residents. We reached more than 10,000 people on social media alone in the first 24 hours since our announcement and will continue to promote the change through Election Day.

Saco offers plenty of alternatives to voting in-person. You can still vote using any of the methods listed at www.sacomaine.org/elections, including absentee (by mail, by drop box, or hand-delivered) or voting early in-person at City Hall, 300 Main Street. As a reminder, the last day to request an absentee ballot in-person is Friday, October 30, 2020, unless a special circumstance exists.
